RECONSTRUCT (THE) NORMATIVE 

Fed Square’s Atrium was transformed for Midsumma Festival into a moving exhibition of photographic portraiture by Australian photographer Soraya Zaman (they/them/theirs).

A constructed bridge commissioned and presented by Fed Square spanned 30 meters across the iconic space, as a metaphorical symbol of journey, connection, crossing over and the social constructs of society.

Titled Reconstruct (the) Normative, the exhibition designed and created by BATIK is an exploration of the social constraints associated with equality and diversity with a focus on trans communities. The exhibition features persons from the ‘American Boys Project’ a critically acclaimed photographic publication by Zaman in 2019 which has received global recognition.

Zaman spent three years travelling across the USA, meeting, and capturing images of people in the trans-masculine community, from big cities to small towns. Zaman’s sincere and tender portraits intuitively capture each person, providing viewers with a snapshot into their lives and journeys across the trans-masculine spectrum.

Working in with the topology of the Atrium - Fed Square. The installation is designed to educate Australian’s about trans communities at large through creative thinking and intuitive design.
